Michael Drews is a composer, musician, and sound artist. Drews produces and performs electronic music under the artist name Hauntron. His work explores the expressive possibilities of sound objects from our everyday world by drawing out an inner spirt or haunted quality buried within the sound itself. This latent, referential aspect of sound can often affect in unexpected ways, unlocking memories and transforming perception. Drews’ music is characterized by dark, ambient environments and vast walls of electronically processed instruments. Sound and imagery linked to horror and sc-fi film nostalgia extends throughout his work.
Works by Drews have been featured throughout United States and abroad, including: the Indianapolis Museum of Art, JavaArts (Phnom Penh), Montreal Underground Film Festival, IN Light IN Light Festival (Indianapolis), Musicacoustica-Beijing, NYC Electronic Music Festival, Toronto International Electroacoustic Symposium, Cinesonika International Film Festival, and the Root Signals Electronic Music Festival.
Drews studied composition at Kent State University (BA), Cleveland State University (MM), and the University of Illinois (DMA). Currently Drews is Associate Professor in the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University—Indianapolis. He teaches course in Theory, Composition, Music Technology and the History of Electronic Music.
